Valentine's Day Dining

Love is in the air! Valentine's Day is celebrated annually on February 14th.

In 2024 this falls on a Wednesday. Onyx will be open from 11am for brunch, lunch, dinner and dessert.

Valentine's Day originated as a Christian feast day, honoring Saint Valentine. There are several stories surrounding honouring Saint Valentine of Rome. One is he performed weddings for Christian soldiers, who were forbidden by the Roman Emperor to marry.

He was jailed for this and later sentenced to death.

Whilst in jail he healed a guard's daughter. They fell in love and an 18th-century embellishment to the story claims he wrote to the guard's daughter before his execution and signed off the letter with "your Valentine". Christian ideology suggest he was buried on February 14th.

Whatever the truth to the legend, today the westernised countries have adopted it as a day of love, including New Zealand.

At Onyx, we are lucky local couples are eager to seize the opportunity for a romantic night out, and traditionally the restaurant is close to being fully booked. The excitement on the night is palpable.

Our team strives to make it a memorable night for those who choose to dine with us.
